AI Code Review and Debugging Workflow

An AI assistant can help explain an unfamiliar module, compare a code change with its requirements, and suggest debugging steps. Make the review specific, evidence-based, and easy for a developer to verify.

What this workflow helps you do

A useful debugging request includes the observed failure, expected behavior, reproduction steps, relevant code, and recent changes. For code review, ask the model to look for concrete risks in a diff rather than asking whether the code is simply good or bad. Treat every finding as a lead to check against the source and tests.

Practical steps

Investigate a bug systematically

Provide the exact error message, steps to reproduce, runtime and version details, and the smallest relevant code sample. Ask for likely causes ranked by evidence, not a speculative rewrite. Have the assistant identify what extra logs or checks would distinguish the leading hypotheses. Once you have a reproducible cause, request a minimal fix and tests.

Review a diff against stated behavior

Give the model a focused diff plus the ticket or acceptance criteria. Ask it to flag potential regressions, missing edge cases, unsafe assumptions, and tests that do not cover the behavior. Request file and line references where possible. Do not let a broad review generate a large set of vague style comments that distract from correctness.

Keep human review in the loop

An AI review is not a guarantee that a change is secure or correct. Verify each finding, check dependency and authorization behavior, and run relevant automated checks. For security-sensitive code, use your normal threat-model and review process. Remove customer data, access tokens, and private information before sharing logs with a model.

Close the debugging loop

After a proposed fix, reproduce the original failure and verify the corrected behavior. Add a regression test where possible. Record the command and output you actually ran, and separate verified facts from model suggestions in the pull request summary.

Detailed implementation guidance

Triage AI code review findings by evidence

Ask the AI code reviewer to distinguish a confirmed defect from a possible concern. A strong finding describes the triggering input or state, the affected code path, and the likely user or system impact. Reproduce it or trace the behavior before changing the patch. If the model cannot cite the relevant code, ask it to inspect a narrower diff or provide a file reference. This keeps review comments focused on defects rather than subjective rewrites.

Debug with hypotheses instead of guesswork

When debugging code with AI, ask for a short list of hypotheses and a way to disprove each one. For example, compare the failing input with a working input or add a temporary log at a specific boundary. This is more useful than accepting the first plausible explanation. Once the cause is confirmed, request a minimal fix and a regression test that fails before the change.

Keep security findings in a separate review pass

Review authentication, permissions, data exposure, unsafe deserialization, and injection risks with the application’s threat model in view. A model may miss an exploit path or produce a false alarm, so validate findings using your approved security process and tooling. Do not paste unredacted production traces or private account data into a model prompt.

Example prompt

Starting briefReview the attached diff against this acceptance criterion: [criterion]. Look for correctness defects, compatibility risks, unhandled edge cases, and missing tests. For each finding, cite the affected code and describe a reproducible failure. If you find no issue, list what you checked and what remains unverified. Do not rewrite the patch.

Quality and safety checks

Review generated output, protect secrets and private data, and run the checks your project requires. Model responses and tool calls should be treated as proposals until your application or a developer validates them.

Common questions about ai code review and debugging workflow

Can an AI code reviewer replace a human reviewer?

No. It can help surface possible issues, but a human should verify findings, understand system context, and approve security- or product-sensitive changes.

What should I include in a debugging prompt?

Include the exact failure, expected result, reproduction steps, relevant code, environment versions, and what changed recently. Share sanitized logs only.
